8th Grade Game Recaps

SVJT vs. Morrison

Lets back up a year. Last year, we played Morrison for the first time in this team's short junior tackle existence. They came to our home field and they didn't just beat us, they beat us up. By the third quarter, we were down to the third string quarterback and ended up losing 18-8.

Fast foreword twelve months. The boys in Black and Red knew what they were in for and the plan was to take the fight to them this time and not be bullied. It would turn into a bruising contest of wills with neither offense able to sustain a drive. Morrison received the opening kickoff but after picking up two hard fought first downs, Logan Alberts (28) blitzed from his OLB position and sacked the Mustang QB, forcing Morrison to punt. After a very good punt return by Kayleb Lipe (82), Stillman could only muster one first down when Jose Ramos (33) broke free for a fifteen yard pick up before they too were forced to punt. Morrison's next offensive series would Mirror that of Stillman's when they could only pick up one first down themselves, mainly due to Frankie Baley (55) who streaked past the OT to sack the quarterback. Stillman's next shot on offense was short lived. Although Ramos picked up two yards on first down, second down would see QB Conner McNames (10) get tripped up by one of his own lineman, losing the two yards they had just gained. On third and ten, McNames dropped back to pass but the Mustang rush broke through and sacked him before he could get the ball off, forcing the Cardinals to punt for the second time in as many tries. Morrison would not be able to capitalize on a short punt where they started their drive on Stillman's forty-five yard line. After a one yard gain on first down, the Mustangs tried to pick up the remaining necessary yardage through the air, but Ramos broke free around the right side from his DE position and sacked the Morrison QB for almost fifteen yards. Two plays later, the Mustangs had to punt again. Stillman's first critical mistake took place at this point when return man Lipe couldn't quite get a handle on the ball and Morrison was quick to pounce on it. As it seems to happen, be it Junior tackle, Pro ball or anything in between, the Morrison offense came out with a renewed sense of purpose after the turnover. Starting on Stillman's thirty-five yard line, Morrison struck fast, first with a pass down field that picked up twenty one yards and then three consecutive runs that allowed them to eat up the remaining fourteen yards to the endzone. Just like that, the score was 6-0. Stillman's defense did stiffen on the two point conversion attempt and turned Morrison away, keeping them within striking distance. The ensuing kickoff was returned to the forty-four yard line, and after McNames completed a short pass to TE Eddie Torrence (81), things were looking good but the following play lead to another critical turnover when the blocking broke down and McNames, while attempting a pitch the ball to his trailing HB, missed his target and the Mustangs were there to jump on the loose ball again. Although Morrison would get close to scoring by completing a twenty yard pass down to the Stillman twenty-five yard line, time ran out in the half, leaving the score 6-0 in favor of the Mustangs.
The second half would start off for the Cardinals much the same way the first half ended when McNames and Ramos got crossed up on a handoff and the ball was left laying on the turf again. Although the ball was recovered by Stillman, and positive yardage was gained on the following play by Alberts, third down would see the ball turned over to Morrison again, this time by way of interception. With great field position, Morrison was looking to pull away, but after an incomplete pass and two minor penalties, things were looking bleak for them. On second and twenty, the Morrison coaching staff called for a QB sneak that got them eight yards back and then on third and long, Stillman's DBs were caught looking in the backfield. Morrison's QB hit his WR down field where Austin Rubeck (84) was able to grab hold of him and slow him down long enough for help in the form of Austin Ross (4) to get over from his S position who layed a wicked hit on the ball carrier, but not until 25 yards had been picked up, along with a first down. Stillman's defense manned up after that and forced Morrison to punt, but now Stillman had ninety yards to go with time running out in the third quarter. Back up HB Rubeck picked up four yards on first down, but when McNames tried to get around the right side on what looked like a bootleg, he was caught in the backfield and dragged down for a four yard loss, knocking the Cards back to the original line of scrimmage. When third down failed to garner even one yard, Stillman was forced to punt. Good fortune shined down on Stillman this time however. When the protection broke down again and McNames' punt was blocked, the loose ball was scooped up by Ramos who then raced twenty-four yards down the right sideline, picking up a first down and breathing new life into the Cardinal's hope of winning the game. Three plays later, Stillman was faced with a forth and four. With the punt team on the field again, the ball was snapped to Ramos instead of McNames and he was off to the races. Ramos ran down the right sideline again, this time for a twenty yard pick up. On the next play, HB Alberts was able to get around the corner on the left side and picked up another twenty-five yards. Morrison would not go away so easily though and their defense recovered so that the Cardinals could not go the final ten yards to even the score and instead and they turned the ball over on downs. Hope was not gone yet however. Even when Morrison picked up a first down, Stillman wasn't giving up. Ramos sacked the Mustang QB again for a nine yard loss and when the Morrison coaching staff tried to pick up the lost yardage by going to the air, CB Rubeck was there to pick up his first interception of the year. After a modest return, Stillman was in great shape on Morrison's twenty-one yard line. Although they got close, Stillman was unable to pick up the last ten yards to the endzone and turned the ball over on downs. With time quickly running out, the Mustangs were content to run the ball. With the coaches and fans screaming to the team that Morrison was trying to kill the clock by running the ball up the middle every time, a QB bootleg to the left caught our kids off guard and before they could recover, he had streaked down the sideline for seventy yards and a touchdown. Again, Stillman turned away the conversion attempt, keeping the score at 12-0, but the time remaining in the game was nearly gone and it didn't look good for our boys. From the stands, it seemed as though the air had gone out of their balloon. Even with a nice return on the ensuing kickoff that put the ball on the forty-seven yard line, the back up players were going in to get a little on field experience. The Stillman players weren't ready to concede just yet however and, on first down, Ramos broke through the first wave of would be tacklers and ran fifty three yards untouched all the way to the endzone. Morrison regained their composure quickly and kept the score at 12-6 by denying the two point conversion. With a 1:10 left, Stillman's only hope was to recover an onside kickoff. Unfortunately, it wasn't in the cards for them. The ball did squirt past the initial line, but Morrison's second line smothered it and, with a couple of kneel downs, the game was over.

If there was anything positive to be found in this loss, it was that the boys played a much better game than they did the year before and they showed they have a never give up attitude which is something positive to build on as the season goes along.

SVJT vs. Newman Meteors

It's Saturday morning and a beautiful day. The first game of the year is here already and it sees our Stillman Valley Cardinals going up against the Meteors of Newman. The last time these two teams met, it was a bruising contest that ended with Stillman Valley winning 8-6, the difference being a successful two point conversion. Although the Cardinals' team has changed out personnel over the years, a big change this year sees long time starter Trevor Gerig (9) missing from his FB and DE positions. On the plus side however, Stillman has new C and MLB Zack Hare (50) joining their crew.

The game starts with Newman winning the coin toss and choosing to receive the ball. Their start is less than productive however when, on first down, Hare comes straight up the middle to throw the Newman running back for a two yard loss. On second down, DE Frankie Baley (55) catches the running back in the backfield for another two yard loss. On third down Christopher Brauns (52) gets to the QB and sacks him, causing a fumble, but it's recovered by Newman who choose to punt on forth and seventeen. Stillman Valley continues to pound, on offense now, by giving the Meteors a steady diet of bruising FB Jose Ramos (33) who goes for nine yards and then five yards on first and second down before breaking off a 30+ yard run for a touchdown. The Cardinals are unable to covert the two extra points however and the score remains 6-0. Newman finds themselves going up against a meat grinder of a defense this day and after three downs, they find they still need the full ten yards to get the first down, so they punt again. Not to be outdone by their first offensive series, the Cardinal coaches call for a dive up the middle on first down and Ramos breaks loose again, sprinting fifty plus yards for Stillman's second touchdown of the morning. The two point conversion is failed again, leaving the score 12-0, but the spirits of the Cardinal players are high with their success so far and bolstered further when, on the ensuing kickoff, Hare streaks down field and crushes Newman's returnman. Newman's coaches are struggling to find something that might crack the shell of this tough Cardinal defense and decide to go to the air since their ground attack has stalled. On first down, Newman's QB just barely overthrows a wide open WR running down the left sideline. Encouraged by the near miss, they go to the air again on second down but this time Hare is there to snag the ball out of the air for his first INT as a Cardinal. Newman gathers their wits and forces Stillman to go three and out on the ensuing offense series, but their own offense, once they have the ball back again, still has a tough time moving the ball in the right direction. On first down, Ramos gets past the OT to sack the QB and after a one yard gain on second down, Brauns catches the QB before he can pitch the ball, and, although he misses the tackle, Hare and Baley are there to clean up and throw him for a five yard loss. With Stillman's defense boosting their confidence, the Cardinals go back to work on offense where they are initially thrown for a short loss on first down but then get a seven yard run followed by a three yard run to set up forth and short, deep in Newman territory. With Conner McNames' (10) hard count, Stillman is able to draw the Meteors off sides for their next first down. Ramos tacks on another three yards and then the Cardinals go to the air where McNames finds Eddie Torrance (81) running down the right side line where he's able to outrun his pursuers the remaining twenty five yards into the endzone for the Cardinals third score of the day. Another failed extra point conversion sees the score at 18-0. Newman, still stymied by the Cardinal D, has minimal success on first down with a one yard gain, but then Ramos sacks the QB again for a 10 yard loss and an incomplete pass later sees the Meteors punt yet again. The Cardinals get two nice runs of three and then five yards, but on third down, Ramos is caught standing to high in his struggle for extra yardage and has the ball is ripped out of his grasp, which is recovered by Newman. The Meteors' offensive woes don't improve however, when first down sees them loose a yard and then on second, Jacob Hoey (23) tracks the ball carrier down for a four yard loss. An incompletion later and the Meteors are punting again. It looks like the Cardinals are on the move late in the first half when McNames throws a strike to TE/WR Taylor Opsahl (20) for a twenty plus yard gain. However, on the next play, a Newman DB makes a play on a ball thrown deep over the middle, cutting off Torrance's route, causing the ball to be over thrown just enough to be tipped into the air and picked off by another Newman DB, ending the half. The second half proves that the Newman coaches are capable of making defensive adjustments on the fly when they force Stillman into a three and out. However, their offensive adjustments fail to make a difference and they continue to struggle. After a modest gain of two yards on first down gives the Meteors a glimmer of hope, no gain on second down and a sack by Stillman's Baley on third down dashes them quickly. Down 18-0, Newman is forced to go for it on fourth down but the desired result is missed when the QB gets sacked again, turning the ball over on downs. Stillman's offense still can't find it's groove on first, second or third down, where they gain only four total yards. Being deep in Meteor territory the Stillman coaches decide to go for it. With a beautifully executed HB option, McNames is able to sprint right, draw the defense to him and then pitch to waiting HB Hoey, who gets around the corner to pick up twelve yards and the first down. Three plays later, Ramos dives up the middle on third and four for an eight yard gain and another first down, putting the ball on the twelve yard line. After a modest two yard gain on first down and then an incompletion on second, McNames hits the mark with Opsahl in the corner of the endzone for the fourth TD of the game. The second half also sees the Cardinals successfully convert their first two point conversion of the year, making the score 26-0. Even with Stillman's backup players filling most of the positions on Newman's next offensive series, they are only able to gain nine yards in three plays and on forth down, they fumble the C/QB exchange and turn the ball over on downs. Simply trying to run the clock out now, Stillman is content to run dives up the middle but on second and eight, Ramos breaks free for his third long TD run of the game. Again the Cards are successful on the two point conversion, making the score 34-0. Newman's final try on the offensive side of things sees them lose nine yards on three tries and with time running out and no hope of winning, decide to punt. Unfortunately for Newman, as their entire day had gone, so did their punt attempt when the snap went over the P head and, although covered by Newman, they lost ten more yards. Stillman continues to run the ball and this time, Newman holds them to just two yards on four tries but time runs out and Stillman is able to go home the victors in a blow out.
